Under the unbroken canopy it runs wide, slow, and tea-black, and the forest peoples speak of it as a being rather than a place: the Blood of Ooliel, moving through the land like life through a body.

- Navigation is inheritance: the channels shift under the canopy, and only the river peoples hold the current map, which is spoken, not drawn.
- The forest cities of the old world stood back from its floods and drank from its side-arms; their landings are the first thing the later age lost.
