Gold Bay

Uhçrë'cuepë, Gold Bay: the shallow western bay whose floor of pale sand turns the whole water to coin-light at midday. There is no gold in it and never was; the name is the sun's work, and the disappointment of every prospector the coast has enjoyed watching for an age. What the bay actually yields is shellfish, safe harbour, and that daily hour when the water burns yellow and even the oldest boatman looks up.
