Vaelen

Vaelen

The Vaelen is a towering quadrupedal apex predator standing 320 to 340 cm at the shoulder, massively muscled yet agile, with a broad wedge-shaped head crowned by raised needle feathers that ripple when it roars. A superficial feather layer covers the enormous frame, and at full charge the animal becomes, as the saying goes, a moving wound in the world. It dwells at the edges of deserts, drylands, and semi-arid savannahs, with feral subpopulations enduring even the frozen highlands; its mere sighting near a village is enough to trigger a full lockdown.

Key traits

  • Feathers can flare outward to increase apparent size during challenge displays, an intimidation tactic that works even on creatures large enough to contest a Vaelen.
  • Sunblooded stamina lets the Vaelen survive searing desert days and frozen highland nights with minimal metabolic fluctuation.
  • Extreme sensory acuity allows it to track vibrations and scent trails over vast distances, detecting prey or settlement long before it comes into view.
  • Capable of blinding-fast charges and high vertical leaps, it cripples prey before any organised defence can form.
  • If hunters fail to bring one down, it enters an open-season pattern, systematically silencing entire settlements.
  • Among Bars and Annils, the Vaelen is known as 'Drysorr,' meaning Stillness of Sorrow, for the eerie silence it leaves in its wake when even the rivers seem to run mute.
